Velobility is the English translation of a German word created by a Swiss bicycle manufacturer and is a subjective measure of how cycle-friendly something that can support bikes or cycling actually is.

The measure can be applied in any city or town to examine workplaces, schools and homes as well as retailers and service providers.

Overall the degree of velobility in any municipality is a reflection of the local government efforts -past and present- to encourage cycling. Bike-friendly measures are essential to a smart growth planning strategy which works to alleviate urban sprawl.
